SYNOPSIS

Richard and Raymond are two teenage brothers in Davao City. Richard is the leader of his gang, “Bagong Buwan,” while Raymond is just being inducted into rival gang, “Batang Dilim.” Complications at a deadly midnight engkwentro (square-off), when Raymond is given the task of killing his older brother. Meanwhile, the Davao Death Squad lurks the streets. This real-life vigilante group is allegedly backed by the city mayor and responsible for many unsolved murders of teen gangsters. Today, they are hunting down Richard. Will they take the younger brother, too?

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

At only 21 years old, PEPE DIOKNO is Cinemalaya’s youngest finalist ever. An undergraduate film major at the University of the Philippines, Pepe’s first movie, No Passport Needed, was nominated Best Short Film at the 2006 Cinemalaya. His second, Dancing for Discipline, for which he spent a year touring jails around the country, has been received well by audiences here, a well as in Brazil, France, and the United States. Pepe writes a column for top national broadsheet, The Philippine Star. He is currently writing, producing, and directing his first feature-length film, Engkwentro.

SYNOPSIS

Based on a true story, Last Supper No. 3 is a humorous look at the circuitous path our legal system takes to justice. Assistant Production Designer Wilson Nañawa is tasked to look for a Last Supper to use as a prop for a TV commercial. He finds three, but loses the one owned by Gareth Pugeda. What happens next changes Wilson forever as he spends the next two years entangled in bureaucracy and red tape facing estafa and serious physical injury charges. How will this ordinary man fare against a system he knows nothing about? Will justice prevail for Wilson? Or will he be imprisoned for the loss of Last Supper No. 3?

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

Veronica Velasco says: “Last Supper No. 3 is my 1^st solo feature as director. I co-directed “Inang Yaya” and “Maling Akala” with Pablo Biglang-awa Jr. I have been working in the production side of the industry for 23 years. I’ve been employed in various fields from news and public affairs, broadcasting, advertising to feature films. I graduated from the University of the Philippines, AB Communication Arts, major in Broadcasting. I also studied at the U.P. College of Law for two years. I trained at the JICA Audio-Visual course Okinawa, Japan. I learned to write screenplays in workshops conducted by Armando “Bing” Lao and have recently attended Syd Field’s Master Class for Screenplay Writing. I am currently part of Star Cinema’s Directors’ Training Program. For the past year, as a DTP scholar, I’ve been privileged to attend classes at the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute. I’m also a single mom whose household consists of a 13 year old daughter, 2 cats, 2 turtles and a very spoiled dog.”

SYNOPSIS

Sanglaan looks at seemingly simple relationships and uncomplicated events happening in a very mundane institution. A religious and single-minded businesswoman with a losing proposition, afraid of old age. A timid, vulnerable girl hopelessly in love with a high school crush. A security guard whose wife has a fragile heart. A charming and mysterious seaman just passing through. And a loan shark who won’t take “no” for an answer. These are some of the characters that populate the milieu of Sanglaan, a light, funny, poignant and very Pinoy story about hope and redemption..

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

Born in 1976, Milo Sogueco is an independent filmmaker and commercial photographer who has produced works both in video and print for various multinational companies and advertising agencies in the Philippines and other countries. He regularly takes photographs for the Philippines’ biggest magazine publishers such as Summit Media and ABS-CBN Publishing. His first foray into filmmaking was in war-torn Jolo in Mindanao where he served as sound recordist and production assistant on Sari Dalena’s documentary Memories of a Forgotten War. At 20, he became a director of a computer information show on the local network ABC 5. A little later, he took on assistant director duties for Gil Portes’ Markova, Comfort Gay, his first project that had a full production budget and known Filipino actors. He had to discontinue his assistant director stint to work on his first short feature film Eroplano (Airplane) which was given a grant by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Eroplano eventually won Grand Prize in a filmmaking tilt sponsored by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. One challenging film project that he did was the documentary Groovy: The Colors of Pacita Abad, the biography of Filipino painter Pacita Abad. This documentary commissioned by the CCP is now commercially released in video in the Philippines, Singapore and the US. Today, Milo, continues to work as a lifestyle/portrait photographer under his own Studio M. He still directs commissioned audio-visual-presentations for clients in the Philippines, Singapore and the US. Filmmaking remains his passion.

SYNOPSIS

Cocoy ,12, takes on a great responsibility of taking care of his older siblings while his mother, Mai, goes to the province to get money to pay the expensive hospital bills for her three mentally sick children. His mother is gone for two weeks and Cocoy’s struggle in managing his personal, school and home life is a nerve-racking challenge. In the end he faces truth and life head-on as he fights for his own sanity.

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

VIC ACEDILLO JR. was a regular award-winning Advertising creative from a multinational ad agency in Makati before he stumbled on the realm of independent filmmaking in 2005 when he wrote BATAD: SA PAANG PALAY for Cinemalaya, 2006. He won his first Best Screenplay award for the said film and so the year after that he decided to direct his first short film (TO NI, Cinemalaya 2007) which also won Best Screenplay. These events encouraged him to make more short films, namely: DIAMANTE SA LANGIT (Cinemalaya, 2008) and KALAWANG NA GINTO (Cinemanila, 2008). Now, he’s directing his first full-length film entitled NERSERI for Cinemalaya 2009. Vic’s stories are simple, highly influenced by Chan Buddhism and are very personal, drawing actual events, meditations, and moments from his life.

SYNOPSIS

HIMALAYA “Laya” MARQUEZ has never had a complete dream since she was 12. Something always wakes her up at night. That something used to be her father, the famous photographer DANILO MARQUEZ, whose constant sexual abuse of Laya tore her family apart. Now, at 27, Laya possesses a cold exterior that hides torrents of pain. Working as a travel photographer, Laya is sent to Isabela to capture a rare harvest ritual called Mangatyanan by the Labwanan tribe.

What Laya finds there, however, is a severely dwindled group held together by their desperate leader MANG RENATO. Soon Laya senses a strong connection between the tribe’s predicament and her own troubled life. Events spiral out of control as the Mangatyanan crumbles under Mang Renato’s desperate grip and Laya is forced to flee. But something happens that brings her face-to-face with her own demons. Will she finally confront her past or will she keep running?

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

JERROLD TAROG is a multi-awarded filmmaker who directs, writes, edits, and scores his own films. His feature film debut, CONFESSIONAL, collected thirteen major awards, including Best Film at the 10th Osian’s Cinefan (India) and garnered numerous nominations from local award-giving bodies. He also maintains a career as a composer for feature films, with critically-acclaimed titles under his belt, such as, KALELDO, FOSTER CHILD and KUBRADOR.

SYNOPSIS

The film is a love story between a Deaf boy who loves to dance and a troubled rocker girl who abuses her hearing. One lives in the world of solitude and silence, the other in noise and fear. Crossing paths in a Baguio camp that mixes Deaf and hearing kids, both find that they have more in common with each other including a love for music.

DINIG SANA KITA is the first Filipino film to have a Deaf Actor in a Lead role. Romalito Mallari is a Deaf performer that has played several stage productions as actor and/or dancer. It also features several Deaf actors in the cast and ensemble.

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

MIKE SANDEJAS wrote, produced and directed the Cinemalaya 2006 Best Film Tulad ng Dati. He works as a filmmaker that creates out-of-the-box media solutions for his government and corporate clients. Mike is also a finalist in the Cinemalaya 2009 short feature category.

SYNOPSIS

Each morning, baskets of black fruits mysteriously appear by the front yard of Fe. Thinking that it was a reconciliatory gesture from her abusive husband, Dante, Fe tells him about it. This only confirms Dante’s suspicions that she might be entertaining a lover. Fearing her husband’s jealousy, Fe grows even more scared as the fruits kept coming, a step closer to her front door. She keeps everything to herself until she turns to a former suitor, Arturo. When Fe urges Arturo to elope, she finds out that the young man has far more binding commitments with his family.

Caught between an abusive husband and an impotent lover, Fe has to decide. Will she escape with her elusive suitor who could very well be just a figment of her imagination or stay trapped with the men in her real life who could never protect her nor make her happy? Caught in a society where violence still remains unimaginably real and covertly present, could the imagined be real enough for a woman to assure her survival?

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

ALVIN B. YAPAN graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Legal Management and a masteral degree in Philippine Literature. He is a poet, a professor, an award-winning fictionist (Palanca Awards, National Book Award, NCCA Writers Prize) and filmmaker whose short film, Rolyo, won the best short film in Cinemalaya and Urian Awards 2007, and competed as the Philippine entry to the Paris Film Festival 2008. He co-directed the feature film Huling Pasada, which won for Best Cinematography in Cinemalaya 2008. He is currently working on his first solo feature length film for Cinemalaya 2009, Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe, and still trying to finish his doctoral degree in Philippine Studies at the University of the Philippines..

SYNOPSIS

Manok is a middle-class treasure hunter who’s been digging for Japanese treasure for years. He and his companions are in the final stage of their current site in the mountains of Suyo, Ilocos Sur, an area reputed as a Japanese stronghold during World War II. All the signs at their site indicate that they are certain to find treasure. With their resources nearly depleted, Manok convinces his godfather in marriage, Freddie, to finance the rest of their operations. Manok, Freddie, and another friend, Boyet, journey back to the site hoping that, as their medium predicted, they will find gold before Manok’s wife gives birth in a month’s time.

Getting back to the site turns out to be more difficult than expected. Manok and his companions manage to make it back to the site but in the process stir up some trouble in the community. Soon, mysterious things happen at the site. With each of them becoming more and more paranoid, Manok struggles to keep the group intact long enough to unearth the treasure that he believes is just within their reach.

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE

ANA AGABIN is the kind of person who would jump off a 30-foot cliff, go hitchhiking in a foreign land, and shoot the rapids in some distant mountain hanging on to nothing more than a waterproofed backpack. She has in fact done all that, and more. That’s why it comes as no surprise that after establishing a profitable business in media production, she puts it at risk by convincing her business partners to go into filmmaking. To which, her partners could only shake their heads and agree. Ana takes a pause from producing their usual fare of corporate videos and documentaries to direct her first feature film, 24K.
